주여,
제게 이런 아들을 주소서
약할 때에 자기를 돌아볼줄 아는 여유와
두려울 때에 자신을 잃지 않는 용기를 가지고
정직한 패배를 부끄러워 아니하며
승리에 겸손하고,온유한 아들을 저에게 주소서.

생각해야 할 때에 고집하지 말게하시고
주님을 알고 자신을 아는 것이 지식의 기초임을 아는 아들을
저에게 허락하여 주소서.

원하오니 아들을 평탄하고 안이한 길로 인도하지 마시고,
고난과 도전에 직면하도록 하소서.
그리하여 폭풍우 속에서 용감히 싸울 줄 알고
패자를 관용할 줄 알도록 가르쳐 주소서.

그마음이 깨끗하고 그 목표가 높은 아들이
남을 정복하려고 하기 전에 먼저 자신을 다스릴 줄 아는 아들이
장래를 바라봄과 동시에 지난날을 잊지 않는 아들이 되게 하소서.

이런 것들을 허락하신 다음 이에 덧붙여 원하오니
유머를 알 게 하시고 생을 엄숙하게 살아감과 동시에
생을 즐길 줄 알 게 하소서.

자기 자신에게 지나치게 집착하지 말 게 하시고
겸허한 마음을 갖도록 하시어 참된 위대성은
소박함에 있음을 알 게 하시고 참된 지혜는 열린 마음에 있으며
참된 힘은 온유함에 있음을 명심하게 하소서.

그리하여 나 아버지는
어느 날 내 인생을 헛되이 살지 않았노라고
감히 고백할 수 있도록 도와주소서.

Build me a son, O Lord,
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
and humble and gentle in victory.

Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds;
a son who will know Thee and that to know himself is
the foundation stone of knowledge.

Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.

Here let him learn to stand up in the storm;
here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose target will be high;
a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men;
one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things are his,
add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
so that he may always be serious,
yet never take himself too seriously.

Give him humility, so that he may always remember
the simplicity of true greatness,
the open mind of true wisdom, and the meekness of true strength.
Then I, his father, will dare to whisper, "I have not lived in vain."
